The Chief Theatre

Suwannee Valley Players was established in 1982 by Nancy Gravel, a woman with a vision of bringing community theatre to our rural part of North Central Florida. Nancy enlisted the assistance of local residents and businesses, bringing the Suwannee Valley Players to life.

After over a decade of performing, upon availability, in the tri-county public school auditoriums, we were finally able to purchase our own home in 1998. With the support of our community, the City of Chiefland, and a special grant from the State of Florida Historical Preservation Division, our now incorporated, non-profit community theatre group was able to purchase the original movie theatre in Chiefland, known always to Levy county residents affectionately as "The Chief Theatre", originally built in 1945.

Over the years this building had changed hands through several types of business offices, and finally became vacant. We felt our calling and established our goal to restore it to its original purpose of providing entertainment to Levy, Gilchrist and Dixie counties.

We are still in the renovation processes of making this little theatre a center for the fine arts in our area.
